Brewarrina Big Fish

Brewarrina Fishing Club has had a total of four releases in the last two years, totalling over 60,000 yellowbelly and cod fingerlings, the fingerlings have been released between Gwandalan to the Brewarrina Weir. The Barwon River will soon be an angler’s favourite spot, although the fingerlings are small, they are capable of growing over 1m in length. 

One of Brewarrina Fishing Club's major event of the year is the Bre Big Fish held on June Long Weekend every year, Registration opens one month prior to event at the Brewarrina Visitor Information Centre and close at 12pm on the Saturday.

Daily weigh-ins are held at the Brewarrina RSL Club - Located on the corner of Bourke and Sandon Streets, one street back from the main street.
Weigh-ins are held on Friday and Saturday from 5pm to 6pm and Sunday from 12 noon to 3pm with the Presentation to follow from 4pm.

Adults $10 - Pensioners and Children $5

The competition is open to all – as long as fees are paid. Competitors must be registered before a fish  can be measured or weighed by a Marshall.

Catch and releases of native fish is preferred but not compulsory.

All fish measured must be caught within the confines of the Barwon River, between the townships of Walgett & Bourke.

 Any competitors found to be fishing illegally by the Fisheries Department will be automatically disqualified and any entry fees will be forfeited.

All fish entered in the competition must be legal size.

Only Golden Perch (Yellow Belly) and Cod will be measured to accommodate catch and release. All members of the Brewarrina Fishing Club are nominated Marshalls for this event. You can email a photo of your fish and your registration details to by 4.30pm each afternoon. It is the competitor’s responsibility to telephone a Marshall at 5pm to ensure they have received your photo. Your photo must be recent and must contain the “20?? Bre Big Fish” registration marker to be eligible. This system is reliant on participant’s goodwill and anyone found abusing this system will automatically disqualified from the competition.

Photos of each day’s Yellow Belly and Cod catches will be displayed at the evening weigh-in and a competition tally board will be updated every evening.

All competitors when weighing in fish must have a separate bag per tag.

Carp is the only species to be weighed –in (whole bodied) and will be disposed of by Brewarrina Fishing Club.

All money raised by the Brewarrina Fishing Club will be used to re-stock the Barwon River.
